Proto-rodents were indeed among the small mammals that survived the Cretaceous Cratering. My own rat story: When my late wife, Penny, and I lived and worked in Jeju, South Korea, we lived in a professors' apartment complex, on the University campus. Rats were among the vermin that lived with us, their home being in the ceiling. I managed to kill three or four of them, using conventional poison-until we heard the horrific shrieking, as they went through convulsions as they were dying. Penny couldn't handle the screeching, so we settled upon a cat. Rat problem went away.
