Likely initially just random computer run targeted solicitation. Then, if/when answering these calls, your META data is automatically listed and based on connection time(s), a value is assigned to your point of contact. This data (called Sucker Lists in the industry) is then sold to other call centers.
In short, you respond, either accidentally or to have 'fun' with a fraudster and you run the risk to be besieged by these kinda operators.
Ken, it sounds from the outside you are being targeted by one of the new predatory AI programs. But its weird about the colleges and such. It sounds like a bot selected you possibly based on your writing and reading. I was selected for Christian scams because I sold Christian books. I never once bought one but I would search the prices to sell my moms ones and then I was hit by stuff like this. Who knows, sorry man.
Frank, that is an interesting observation and I can't rule out AI, which is insidious. I know my phone number is on the dark web but I'm not sure where. Some of the extended warranty companies addressed me in emails as "Kent" and had the wrong make of car.
